Mariano Mayol: Four decades of art, nature, and tradition

The artist Mariano Mayol (Palma, 1965) is celebrating forty years of professional career dedicated to painting this year. He began his career in 1985 and, just one year later, won the Ciutat de Palma Painting Prize (1986), an award that marked the beginning of his artistic career. Thanks to this award, gallery owner Ferran Cano took notice of his work and offered him his first solo exhibition at the Galería 4 Gats (1987), marking the beginning of a solid career that has continued ever since.

In 1994, Mayol once again stood out by winning First Prize in the IV International Painting Competition of the Barceló Foundation, consolidating his position as one of the most important figures on the Mallorcan art scene.
Throughout his career, he has participated in prestigious international fairs such as ART BASEL (Switzerland), ART FRANKFURT (Germany), and ARCO (Madrid), and has exhibited his work—both individually and collectively—in numerous European cities: Munich, Frankfurt, Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, and, of course, Palma de Mallorca.
His pictorial language has evolved over the years, passing through different stages—from symbolism to geometrism and figuration—until reaching his current artistic maturity, marked by a profound symbolism linked to nature and tradition.
In his new creative phase, Mariano Mayol leaves behind the maritime iconography that defined his work for years—maps, coastlines, boats, and nautical charts—to venture onto dry land. On this occasion, his gaze falls on the countryside, origins, and nature, drawing inspiration from an ancient tradition: the cultivation and production of oil.
This evolution reaffirms the artist’s connection with Mallorca, its history, traditions, and culture, as well as his ongoing search for meaning through art.
